Our Story

Earth Spirit started with a vision by the Rev. Joycelyn Midose in the early nineties. Under her guidance and - in time - that of her son Christopher, Earth Spirit has become a dream realized. Starting in a small space in 1991 , the store quickly gained renown for its curious inventory and talented psychic readers. During those days, the shop was the target of no end of criticism and was nearly shut down by the town for performing Tarot and Astrology readings which were, at the time forbidden under an old blue law from the 1920’s. The story gained attention and was even taken up by the New York times as a discrimination issue. Increased media attention - as well as an outpouring of local support - saw the local laws overturned. And with that, we were on the map.

Growing year after year, the store temporarily opened a second location in town before consolidating to a larger space in 2005. In 2019 Christopher became sole owner of Earth Spirit. He and his partner Rob devote their energy into making Earth Spirit a place where people can find any type of metaphysical item, find guidance through psychic and astrological readings or simply draw in the good vibes and relaxing atmosphere our store provides.

We remained at the Monmouth Street location for another 17 years before fate would have us moving again; this time to our current incredible location on Broad Street. From almost being thrown out of town to working next to some of the most incredible shops and eateries in our area has been a wild ride and an incredible honor.
